HOPWORK ORANGE

The Pony says "I am plotting my next move"

Tasting Notes

(4.8% Alc.)

The unmistakable pony brand of the infinite long flavour. An exceptionally smashable APA with uncanny blend of hops, oozing aromas of oranges, followed by an excursion through the fruit orchard.

Intense tangerine flavours, hints of honey melon, mango and pine. The hop bitterness raises and lingers smoothly for a thousand years.

BLACK ALE

The Pony says ‘This pony is dark and can’t be seen at night’

Tasting Notes

(6% Alc.), 3 times hopped

This dark ale is between an ‘American Black Ale’ and ‘American Stout’ according to British Ale Style Guide. Designed with reduced burned roast astringency and low on dry roast bitterness finishing normally found in stouts, this Black Ale has been crafted with a balanced towards rich roasted malty flavours, coffee, chocolate, liquorice and molasses. Late, lingering with moderate bitterness to balance the initial sweetness.

A big body yet light and easy to drink. Ideally matched with slow cooked meat dishes like shanks, beef cheeks, stews and bakes, this ale is also a favourite with desserts.

Moderate bitterness 35 IBU

PALE ALE

The Pony says ‘The spicy aroma lingers and makes the Pony frisky behind the shed’

Tasting Notes

(5.5% Alc.), 4 times hopped

A rich, dark-golden colour with lots of head, malt aroma and big hop flavours. The emphasis is on hop, malt and fruity flavours. A full flavoured, rich ale without the high bitterness of some more assertive American Pale ales. Definitely a ‘bigger’ ale than the ‘Blonde Ale’ and favoured by those who appreciate a fuller but balanced flavour profile. Also four-times hopped with more late hop additions in the boil and fermented with American Ale style yeast for more fruity notes. This goes well with full flavour Asian dishes, fish, seafood and chicken dishes.

Low to moderate bitterness, 28 IBU

AMBER ALE

The Pony says ‘This will blow the rust of the brewshed roof'

Tasting Notes

(5% Alc.), 6-times hopped

Rich amber colour with lots of malt aroma and hop flavours. The style is based on ‘American Amber’. A malty Amber ale with citrus and resinous hop characters. Designed to have good body yet light and easy with ‘long’ flavours and lingering late bitterness. This ale is six-times hopped with American and Australian hops and fermented with ale yeast. The perfect ale to share with pasta and steak or hearty home-style cooked meals.

INDIA RED ALE

The Pony says ‘I always knew they’re hiding more hops in the thatched roof, finally they got them out for some nice dry-hopping’

Tasting Notes

(7.9% Alc.), 4 times hot hopped and dry hopped

This ale is based on ‘American Imperial Double Red Ale’ according to the British Ale Style Guide. With a dark red brownish colour, a firm creamy head and lots of fruity aromas on the nose, this ale has a big, malty body with late bitterness. The Red has been crafted with big dry hop aromas coming through from citrusy and tropical fruity hop varieties. With late lingering bitterness it is in perfect harmony with the fruity hop aromas. This Thoroughbred goes well with Asian and Curry dishes and presents well when matched to blue cheeses and smoked meats.

Moderate to full bitterness 60 IBU

“The Home of Long Flavour”

This herd of ponies know a thing or two about long flavoured beers with bold, big malt flavours and amazing hop aromas that tickle your senses.

Head brewer, Frank Samson is forever on the hunt for the next brew sensation. He has had a long association with brewing having brought this tradition with him from Germany. Working closely with his team, he strives to ensure traditions and innovations are upheld and passed on.

It takes time and patience to brew this way. Long flavours can’t be rushed! It gives us time to think about the next brew…and then think about the one after… so that each batch tastes as good as the one before.

We believe method and the best raw ingredients matter.

At the Prancing Pony we believe craft beer should have character. Beer made from traditional ingredients – simply malted grain, hops, yeast and water. And that other elusive ingredient - the brewer’s skill.

Flavour vs Economics? The time-honoured process of all grain brewing has been used for centuries. Although it’s not the cheapest method, it still prevails as the BEST method for flavour production.  Balance is the outcome, with enhanced caramelisation producing a fuller malt flavour without adding heaviness to the beer. Alongside the malty caramelisation, Frank throws in a heap of hop varieties to bring a refreshing bitter edge, long flavour and amazing aromas.

Mass produced beer is dominated by the “same same” lager style, produced in huge batches by highly industrialised and automated processes with a minimum of ingredients and maximum efficiency. This “packet mix” notion results in a uniform blandness, where lack of flavour is replaced by over-carbonation.

We object to this.

This is why we do small batch craft brewing, exclusively by all grain method for that extra long malt flavour. This is why we use incredible amounts of late hopping for hop flavour and late, smooth and lingering bitterness without a sting. This is why we stubbornly refuse to filter our beer, to retain all those flavours we spent so much time in producing in the first place. This is why we bottle and keg condition, for additional flavour and to keep the beer alive for years of cellaring.

The philosophy of our head brewer is to craft beers that have long flavours. Like a story from long gone by, you think it’s finished but it carries on. Like an intricate painting, the longer you look at it, the more you discover. Not just beer with flavour, but flavours that speak to you. It puts the beer into context, like a story puts you into a place and time.

And not to get on our high-horse – because we’re not like that – we’d like to add that everything we do considers the local community and the environment. All our ingredients are sourced locally, where possible, and we choose to reduce, re-use and recycle wherever we can. Let’s just say, the donkey on our farm is truly grateful for all the spent grain when we’ve finished with it!

THE HOME OF LONG FLAVOUR

It’s true… Our brewer, Frank, won’t compromise on taste or craft.

Frank’s brewing process requires a slow, methodical and hands-on technique. The emphasis is on using only the best raw ingredients and the brewer’s craft to create a more complex beer.   That’s not to say we aren’t always looking to the future – we’re quite happy to embrace both tradition and progress.

It requires a totally hands-on approach, and that’s how we like it. And when you get your hands on one of our beers, we guarantee you’ll taste the difference.

What is Craft Beer?

Craft beer can broadly be defined as a beer made in a traditional way by a small brewery where the outcome is largely determined by skills and knowledge of the brewer and the quality of the ingredients used in the brewing process.

You may wonder why craft beer consumption has taken off these days? Like for many other products, beer drinkers are becoming more discerning with the beers they consume and buy. They make decisions based on taste, wholesomeness, integrity and the naturalness of the product. Beliefs, political judgements and the relationships with the people that produce the beer may also be important decision points when buying beers.

At the Prancing Pony Brewery we believe in using the finest, purest ingredients without rushing the process or skipping on ingredients. We use malt, hops, yeast and water ONLY. Our beers are made with love and we have fun while we make them.

We are a small privately 100% Australian owned business and we are proud to serve our beers to our customers.

Giddy up.

Key members of the Prancing Pony Brewery herd are:

Frank Samson (Brewing Pony)
Frank loves flavoursome beers. He is the Head Brewer, Engineer, Physicist and generally good guy. Frank can imagine smells in his head and enjoys creating flavour from plants grown in the ground, neat and pure. He enjoys his food and sausages, potatoes and pickles are his favorite food. He has a wicked sense of humour and still laughs when watching the Blues Brothers although he has seen it at least 10 times. He is meticulous in his approach to brewing, a bit compulsive perhaps and defiantly inpatient but sure about his love for Craft Beer.

Corinna Steeb (Business Pony)
Corinna is the Business Pony who gallops ahead looking for greener grass and the next grazing paddock. Corinna is the CEO, she can be a bit tough and loves to close a good deal and is the internal optimist. Trained in Medical Sciences, details don’t escape her. She likes to talk, meet and connect people and always thinks of new and exciting things to do. She loves the Black Ale with a mildly spicy curry. She is always busy doing what she does best, keeping busy.

Paul Smith (Sales Pony)
Paul is a foodie, craft beer lover and connoisseur of all things good. His favourite beer is the Copper, our beautifully dry hopped English Ale. Paul is the Sales Pony and gets a kick out of seeing our beers listed in trendy venues, matched with cool foods. His favorite words are brilliant, awesome, delicious and really?

Jessica Smith (Finance Pony)
Jessica love to organize numbers and gets a kick out of counting things. She loves the Craft beer scene, eclectic venue fit outs and she is the chalk board queen. We all love Jessica because her writing is so neat, it’s the only one we all can read. Her favorite beer is the Pale Ale and she is really happy that it was chosen by Jamie’s Italian.
